A MAL TIEMPO, BUENA CARA – 1 YEAR 10 MO. 29 DAYS

toe in cast
Bad thing #2: My big toe swaddling in tape and tape stitches. (Sorry about the pic quality …. I only had the computer cam).

Bad things come in threes, right? After yesterday, I am a believer.

Bad thing #1: Grounded.

So apparently, it’s cold right? I believe one headline read, “Midwest punched by freezing weather.” Yeah… just like it punched my emotions by keeping my friend, Jackie, from boarding her Dallas flight.

The truth is I almost believe it all to be conspiratorial because of how beautiful the weather is here.

Isla Saona

Isla Saona: the reason I don't believe in cold right now.

I mean, I spent the weekend visiting a friend on her own island for crying out loud. I laid on a beach that was so beautiful they had used one close to it to film Pirates of the Caribbean.

Cold? LIES.

Bad thing #2: Big toe

Walking is hazardous to your health here in the DR. In fact, there is a story passed down to every volunteer group about this girl who fell in garbage sludge up to her neck because she overlooked a gap in the sidewalk (Gringo traps, we now call them).

No, I did not fall into some abyss. Instead, I decided – inadvertently – to punt kick a pole base in the side-walk, taking out the bottom half of my right big toe.

Blood was everywhere, as my walking buddy pointed out.

“Stop looking at it!” I laughed, just wanting to get to medical office two blocks away.

I now have the most uncool cast you can possibly get. I mean, no one can even sign the thing.

Bad thing #3: Crashed

In my attempt to flee my experiences in the capital, I jumped on a bus to visit my friend in San Cristobal.

Sure enough, the third and final bad came shooting out in front the carro in the form of a moto.

BAM!

Each of the six passengers let out his or her own expletive. The driver stopped traffic by getting out of the vehicle and cursing everyone within a 10 foot radius.

No one was hurt, and we just kept driving.

BEST THING: I survived the day, obviously. Plus, I laughed through it all. (I’m not sure if that means insanity, but I know it definitely means specialness…)

  1. Oh goodness. I think that this is just a characteristic of our lives!! You make me feel more sane by hearing these stories, if that makes you feel any better :)
I love you and hope your toe heals fast! That is just the worst- it’s like your car being broken down, because your feet are technically your car! haha.
    Love love love.
