QUERIDA PATTY GRIFFIN – 1 YEAR 6 MO. 13 DAYS

I often think about how different bands mark different periods of my life – like Matchbox 20, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dashboard Confessional did for high school.

For my time in Peace Corps, hands down, Patty Griffin will be forever correlated in my memory to the island (along with all the bachata… no escaping that).

Still, I feel like I should apologize for what’s about to happen to you, but since when do I do that on this blog (or in person, really)?

Hope you at least enjoy the videos at the end?

Dear Patty Griffin,

Thank you:

For that one time when the crazy man was laying against me in the gua-gua for an hour… only my iPod kept this southern gal’s temper from causing an international incident.

For that time at Stephanie’s in El Limon (and during Semana Santa), where five gals and I were up to all hours with Sarah’s guitar attempting to sing “Forgiveness” and “When it Don’t Come Easy.” And then for later that weekend, when I swung in a hammock down the block from a group of them at 2 a.m. repeating the concert. (haha).

For the numerous dance parties we’ve had together (and alone in my house with mop in hand.)

For basically being awesome enough for me to write a ridiculously dumb post to you on Dominican Mully.

Here’s to you, Patty. Thanks for the inspiration and the fun. We need it and appreciate it.

- L.M.

“We’re gonna go way beyond the walls of this fortress
And we won’t be afraid, we won’t be afraid, and though the darkness may come our way
We won’t be afraid to be alive anymore
And we’ll grow kindness in our hearts for all the strangers among us
Till there are no strangers anymore”

All I could find for this next one was this KIWI animation (sorry) but the song’s the best:

“It’s a mad mission
Under difficult conditions
not everybody makes it
To the loving cup
It’s a mad mission
But I got the ambition
Mad, mad mission
sign me up”
